One of the first rules of being frugal and fabulous is making your own condiments. (Unless, of course, you have a coupon which makes them FREE at the store and then, you know, there's that.) My family loves, loves, loves Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce. I like for heat in my sauce, but The Teenager and Mr. OFM put it on everything- fries, sammies, you name it. As soon as Sweet Baby Ray's hit the market, I went to work duplicating it at home. No way I'm paying full price from something I KNOW I can make at home and make well, too. I'm just full of myself like that.

Making your own barbecue sauce at home is super simple and just like with baking your own bread and crackers or even making your own cleaning products, once you start doing it, you'll wonder why you ever wasted your money on the store bought kind.

The thing I like best about making my own barbecue sauce- besides the taste and how easy it is to do- is that it is easily canned in a hot water bath. (Give 1/2" head space. 30 minutes.) You can also freeze this sauce, but I like canning the best because it makes for faboo gifts. PLUS, there's nothing like impressing the hell out of your company by serving up your own canned barbecue sauce. :o)

Peace, B.

You'll need the following ingredients to make four cups of sauce:

1 & 1/2 cups brown sugar (light or dark)
1 & 1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup water
1 & 1/2 tablespoons Worchestershire sauce
2 & 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
2 teaspoons paprika
1 & 1/2 teaspoons pepper
1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt

Okay, here comes the complicated part.

Add all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk them together. Cover and let sit a spell before you use so the flavors get a chance to know one another. Or pour directly into jars for canning.

Seriously. That's all there is to it. Now, don't you want to go try this out for yourself?

You're welcome.
